In-School Audience

Elementary School

Every year from January through March, musicians of the Greensboro Symphony give In-School Ensemble concerts in all Guilford County Schools elementary schools. The Brass Quintet, String Quintet, Woodwind Quintet, and Percussion Trio combine to give over 70 performances and are heard by 12,000 fourth- and fifth-grade students! Presentations introduce students to orchestral instruments, prepare students for attending full orchestral performances, encourage students to begin studying a musical instrument, and include time for students to ask questions.

In March and April of every year, all third and fourth-grade students in the Piedmont region hear a dynamic program by the full Greensboro Symphony. The Elementary School concerts serve over 18,000 students in Guilford, Rockingham, Randolph, and Alamance Counties. These performances may also be attended by private school and homeschool groups, and students from other counties.

The Lillian Rauch Beginning Strings Program is a collaboration between the Greensboro Symphony, the UNCG School of Music, Peck Elementary School, and Cone Elementary School.

Directed by Dr. Rebecca MacLeod and with graduate assistants and Symphony musicians as teachers, the program provides instruments and instruction free of charge. The program prepares students for challenging opportunities in music and life while nurturing and developing their creative talents. The program utilizes the American String Teachers’ Association (ASTA) curriculum, and provides music education majors an opportunity to develop as future teachers. Program highlights include annual performances at GSO concerts and in the UNCG Recital Hall, performances for celebrities such as Maya Angelou, and visits by guest artists including members of the Sphinx Orchestra. Graduates of the program continue to perform in middle and high school orchestras, the Greensboro Symphony Youth Orchestra, and the UNCG School of Music. Many students continue in the Peck Alumni Leadership Program, which features free private lessons and peer mentoring opportunities.
