Youth Orchestra
The Greensboro Symphony Youth Orchestra (GSYO) is a select ensemble with strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion, performing both newer works and orchestral favorites in the original versions.
Beginning in 1971 as a single ensemble, the GSYO program has grown to include multiple groups with progressive educational goals, offering opportunities for young players through advanced high school students. Musicians are placed in ensembles by audition.
The mission of the Greensboro Symphony Youth Orchestra is to provide a professionally directed environment for young musicians to study, prepare, and perform music, to serve the community at large by providing high quality, free performances, to complement school music programs, and to encourage and advocate the arts, music, and music education in the Piedmont Triad region.
Members take part in weekly rehearsals, small group coaching by members of the Greensboro Symphony, two to five public performances per year, an annual overnight retreat, domestic and international performing trips, and additional social and cultural activities. The GSYO program provides additional opportunities including professional coaching, chamber music, composition contests, recording sessions, an annual concerto competition, and complimentary tickets to Greensboro Symphony concerts.
