The Greensboro Symphony Orchestra announces Auditions for Youth Orchestra!

Greensboro, NC – The Greensboro Symphony Youth Orchestra (GSYO) program announces auditions for its 49th season of inspired music-making! Auditions will take place by appointment at the Greensboro Cultural Center, September 13 –15, 2019. There are currently openings for all orchestral instruments. The program is open to all young musicians through high school, with additional string programs available for younger students. In addition to regular performances at community venues, the 2019-2020 season will include a Side-by-Side performance with the Greensboro Symphony in the new Stephen Tanger Center for the Performing Arts in May 2020!

Dr. Evan Feldman returns for his third year as Music Director of the GSYO. Dr. Feldman serves as Associate Professor at UNC Chapel Hill, where he conducts the Wind Ensemble, is Music Director of the Triangle Wind Ensemble, guest conducts the Chapel Hill Philharmonia, and is cover conductor for the NC Symphony. He is sought after both nationally and internationally as a guest conductor, with recent engagements throughout the United States, Romania, Belgium, Spain, and Tanzania. He has been described in the press as “…the real thing – a conductor with evident ensemble-building skills who knows his way around the podium.”

Composed of many of the Triad’s best and brightest young musicians, the GSYO attracts outstanding students from Raleigh, Fayetteville, Charlotte, and Southern Virginia. Students in all groups enjoy unparalleled orchestral opportunities, lifelong friendships, a strong complement to their school music education, and a deeper connection with music. Weekly rehearsals for all groups are held on Sunday afternoons at the University of North Carolina at Greensboro. The GSYO season runs from September through May with frequent performances in the Triad’s major concert venues.

The GSYO program includes three ensembles. (1) The Youth Orchestra is a challenging and nurturing environment for highly advanced orchestral playing, including strings, woodwinds, brass, and percussion. (2) The Youth Philharmonic, for advanced string players who are looking for an enriching and motivating ensemble, is conducted by Greensboro Symphony violinist Ms. Colleen Chenail. (3) The Youth Strings, conducted by Ms. Heather Lofdahl, is a string ensemble where students can focus on technical, musical, and ensemble skills in an environment with students of similar age. Full descriptions of the ensembles and their respective entry requirements are available at www.GSYO.org.

Audition appointments may be made by emailing education@greensborosymphony.org or through the website www.GSYO.org/join. There is a $15.00 fee to audition and if accepted, tuition for the year is $300 ($200 for string ensembles). Full and partial scholarships are available.
