(GREENSBORO, NC) On September 19 and 21 at 8:00 pm, the Greensboro Symphony Orchestra (GSO) will present Violin Virtuosos at Dana Auditorium on the campus of Guilford College. This showcase of awe-inspiring performances features internationally acclaimed violinists Mayuko Kamio and Risa Hokamura as they join GSO’s Maestro Dmitry Sitkovetsky and Concertmaster Marjorie Bagley in concert. The four virtuosos will perform Vivaldi’s Concerto for Four Violins as well as the U.S. premiere of Sarasate’s Navarra Fantasy for Four Violins and Orchestra. The evening will also feature Saint Saen’s Violin Concerto No. 3 and Lalo’s Symphonie Espagnole for Violin and Orchestra.
Mayuko Kamio has built an impressive international presence including recent appearances with the Boston Pops and the Munich Philharmonic. In Kamio’s second appearance with the GSO, Kamio will be joined by her student, Risa Hokamura. Only seventeen, Hokamura has recently been making a name for herself internationally, winning the 2018 Young Concert Artists International Auditions and following in her teacher’s footsteps by doing so.
Featuring all four virtuosos, Vivaldi’s Concerto for Four Violins is from a set of the first twelve concertos Vivaldi ever had printed, collectively known as “L’estro armonico” or “The Harmonic Inspiration”. Hokamura will then take the stage on Saint Saen’s Violin Concerto No. 3, while Kamio will appear as a soloist on Symphonie Espagnole. The Violin Concerto No. 3 is Saint Saens’s final violin concerto and was dedicated to Sarasate. The piece premiered in 1880 with Sarasate as a soloist.
The GSO will conclude the evening by bringing all four violinists back onto the stage to perform the U.S. premiere of an arrangement of Pablo de Sarasate’s Navarra, by Maestro Sitkovetsky. His arrangement is entitled Navarra Fantasy for Four Violins and Orchestra.
