The Greensboro Symphony Orchestra presents Vivaldi, Bach & Co.

(GREENSBORO, NC) The Greensboro Symphony Orchestra (GSO) is proud to present Vivaldi, Bach & Co., sponsored by Cone Health and Bank of America Private Bank, on October 17 and 19 at 8:00 p.m. at Guilford College’s Dana Auditorium! Joining the GSO is internationally acclaimed pianist, Julia Zilberquit, performing her transcriptions of Vivaldi and Bach’s Concerto in A minor for piano and strings and Concerto in D minor for piano and strings. These concertos will be preceded by Copland’s Suite for Orchestra from Appalachian Spring, and followed by Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 9 in E-flat Major.

Julia Zilberquit has earned international critical acclaim as a recitalist, chamber musician, and recording artist, and has been hailed as “an outstanding soloist” by the New York Times. A graduate of Moscow Gnessin School of Music and The Julliard School, she has made appearances at the world’s major halls and music festivals. She is also a former student of the famed pianist Bella Davidovich, mother of our very own Maestro Dmitry Sitkovetsky. A champion of Baroque and Classical keyboard, Zilberquit has performed with numerous orchestras, such as The Brooklyn Philharmonic, The Russian Philharmonia, and The Vienna Chamber Orchestra to name only a few.

Opening the program is the orchestral suite of Aaron Copland’s American classic, Appalachian Spring. This work has become a standard in orchestral repertoire and earned Copland a Pulitzer Prize for Music in 1945. The evening will conclude with Shostakovich’s Symphony No. 9, which also has its roots in the later years of World War II. In 1945, when the U.S.S.R. was at the height of victory over Nazi Germany, Shostakovich was compelled to write a massive work in celebration. The result was this playful piece that Shostakovich himself said “musicians will like to play and critics will delight in blasting.” You should be the judge of that! Don’t miss the opportunity to see Vivaldi, Bach & Co. featuring Julia Zilberquit with the GSO!
